Abstract
This study has been my long struggle to renew my church through the liberation of the oppressed single women in my church. My church has many single women due to its special location. However, no special attention was given to these single women. Since to Protestant Missionaries first arrived in 1884, the Christian Church in. Korea has grown up with a primary emphasis on individual salvation and institutional growth. Despite external growth., the Korean church does not attend to social problems. As a result, the Korean church does not relate its ministry to the neighboring community's problems, alienating the ·community from the church ministry. In some cases, strong conflicts exist between local communities and church congregations. Among many social issues, the oppression toward the single women is one of the most serious issues that needs the urgent involvement of the church today. The poverty, discrimination, hopelessness., loneliness, and the lack of family life· make the situation of the single women more miserable. Traditionally, Korean women have suffered from the various oppressions. Though they played a significant role for the rapid church growth, the Korean woman Christians are not allowed to participate in the decision-making process of the church. Korean women constitute nearly 70 % of the church membership, but they are not allowed to be ordained as pastors or elders. They are forced to be silent, passive, and submissive. In this situation, the single women are the most oppressed among the oppressed. Therefore, as a pastor of San Jung Hyun Presbyterian in Seoul church where many single women are members, I want to renew my church through the liberation of oppressed single women. Thus, this study is an attempt to renew San Jung Hyun church through various conscientizing programs for liberating the oppressed single women.
